DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) C1 - where it takes us.

As per the guidelines of CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), these are the things learners are supposed to be able to do once they are at the C1 level.

Listening:
They can understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly. They can understand television programmes and films without too much effort.

Reading:
They can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. They can follow complex arguments and appreciate distinctions of style.

Spoken interaction:
They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. They can formulate ideas and opinions with precision and relate their contributions skillfully to those of other speakers.

Spoken production:
They can present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing particular points, and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.

Writing:
They can express themselves in clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length. They can write about complex subjects in a letter, an essay, or a report, underlining what they consider to be the salient issues. They can select a style appropriate to the reader in mind.

In short, learners with a C1 level:

  • Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning.

  • Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much searching for words.

  • Can use the language effectively and flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

  • Can produce well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns and cohesive devices.

Administrative importance:

The C1 level is often required for access to postgraduate academic programs, competitive job positions, or roles where a high level of language autonomy is expected. It is a strong indicator of advanced and autonomous language proficiency.
